Handheld XRF Analyzers

What is an XRF analyzer?

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence. It’s a powerful, nondestructive technique for measuring elemental composition from magnesium (Mg) to uranium (U), from parts per million to 100%. Handheld XRF analyzers are portable devices that can be used on location for immediate, lab-quality results to help you determine the next course of action and where it’s needed.

X-Ray Fluorescence FAQ

How does XRF technology work?

An analyzer emits X-rays that hit the sample. This causes the elements in the sample to fluoresce and travel back to the analyzer’s X-ray detector. The analyzer counts them and makes mathematical calculations to generate a result.

Find out more about how XRF technology works.

What is an XRF analyzer used for?

They’re used for applications where you need to identify the material chemistry or alloy ID of a sample. Being able to take a lab technique into the field enables the analysis of samples that are too large, unwieldly, or costly to transport to the lab. Onsite analysis enables real-time information and decision making.

How much does an XRF analyzer cost?

An XRF analyzer’s price is influenced by many factors, including the detector type (PIN or silicon drift detector), X-ray detector size, anode material, and accessories. The best way to determine cost is to figure out what you need to get results for the elements you’re trying to measure. Contact your local Olympus representative for help choosing the right analyzer.

What can an XRF analyzer detect?

Handheld XRF analyzers can measure element magnesium (Mg) to uranium (U). You can point an XRF analyzer at almost anything and get a result. Common applications include scrap sorting, alloy grade identification, quality control (QC) in metal manufacturing, geological exploration or mining, testing industrial materials like cement or coal, and testing for lead in paint or other contaminants in consumer products.
