Thickness and Flaw Inspection Solutions
Overview

Supplied with magnetic and suction cup mounting bases, the wire encoder is easy to install on ferromagnetic and nonferromagnetic surfaces. It’s the tool of choice for training and procedure development, and the wire encoder can even be used on site to perform inspections when using other scanners is impractical.

A wire encoder system is unique compared to most manual scanners as its core is fixed to the part so that it remains stationary as the user moves the probe. This provides several advantages:

  • Position readings are more precise and repeatable (no wheel slippage).
  • The user can concentrate on manipulating the probe and paying attention to coupling without having to manage the pressure of a spring-loaded encoder.
  • The increased freedom of movement enables slight adjustments of the probe skew, which can be advantageous when sizing cracks, for example.

Features

  • 1-meter-long (3.3 ft) rugged stainless steel wire
  • Compatible with ferromagnetic and other smooth surfaces
  • Quick attachment system compatible with our universal holder (see below)
  • Encoder resolution of 49.5 steps/mm

Universal Holder

Use the universal holder to attach the wire encoder or Mini-Wheel™ encoder in up to three different orientations to most phased array (PA) wedges. Installation is quick and easy, and no tools are required. The universal holder can also be attached directly to a phased array probe, enabling contact inspection when the use of a wedge is impossible.
