Plug-In Scripts Enhance Your XRF Data Display: Example in Watch Authentication

By  -
Watch authentication using XRF analysis

Did you know that our standard XRF data display is just a starting point?

The software for our Vanta™ XRF analyzer family now accepts customizable plug-in scripts to enhance the data display. These plug-in scripts take the XRF result, apply logic, and display an outcome on the screen. In other words, Vanta plug-in scripts help turn raw data into actionable results that guide quick, confident decisions.

So how do plug-in scripts for XRF analyzers work in practice? Consider the following example using our Vanta GX precious metal analyzer.

Power of Plug-in Scripts for Your XRF Data Display: Example in Watch Authentication

Pawn shops, cash-for-gold operations, and other precious metals dealers often also deal in high-end wristwatches. One way to help verify the authenticity of the watch is to identify the grade of metal used in the watchband. However, grade identification algorithms aren’t part of the precious metal software package. So Evident engineers applied their plug-in scripting knowledge to:

  1. Take the XRF chemistry result
  2. Compare it to the specified chemistry of the known grades used in watchbands
  3. Display the grade name as a message on screen if the result falls within one of those specifications

A plug-in script acts on the XRF test results and displays the alloy grade match

This custom grade match result provides the pawn shop a quick and seamless way to know if the material is what it’s supposed to be. There’s no need to remember or look up the specifications for the watchband metal. With plug-in scripts, Vanta GX precious metal analyzers add value in ways beyond providing the concentration of gold, platinum, and palladium.

While this example uses our precious metal analyzer, Vanta plug-in scripts can be applied to any XRF analyzer in our Vanta series, including handheld and in-line XRF.

Creating Plug-In Scripts for XRF Applications

So how do we create these custom scripts?

Our engineers write Vanta plug-in scripts in the common programming language Python. Importantly, plug-ins enable customization of the results display efficiently and quickly without the delay of waiting for features to be developed in the base software. This makes plug-in scripts an extremely flexible tool. The customization possibilities are only limited by the capabilities of Python.
